Trains are becoming every popular with people who are wishing to travel within the British Isles. The reason behind this is very practical and straightforward and comes down to the fact that the trains are much cheaper than flying whilst being almost as fast. With a flight you have to get through check-in 2 hours ahead of your flight, wait around for boarding, then there’s the journey, then you have to wait around for your bags for an age with the constant fear that the airport has managed to lose them. This is all very stressful and, whilst it is unavoidable if you are planning to travel abroad, it is an unnecessary hassle if you are going to Scotland. It is very cheap to catch a train too; you can get to and from London to Waverly station in less than 5 hours for less than £100. With this you get the security of knowing your bags are safe, the comfort of a lovely seat and even a good meal.

The one thing you do not get, however, is a vehicle once you arrive in Edinburgh. Obviously, it is possible to get yourself around Edinburgh by walking but you have to be very fit and only want to see the city; not the surrounding area. If you wish to explore a bit more of Scotland it is very important that you hire a car from the station. This will take a matter of minutes if you book in advance and will not cut into your holiday time.

When you are visiting a country, the first port of call is very often the capital city. People feel a sense of security by going to the capital city and see it as a good way of easing yourself into a new culture before fully exploring all that it has to offer. No matter where you go, this is usually the case – people flock to London before heading off to Manchester, or to Paris before going to Lyon. In Scotland, the main airport is in Edinburgh and the vast majority of people fly there when they want to visit Scotland. This means that you see the capital and get a feel for the culture as opposed to throwing yourself in at the deep end by going straight to the Highlands! However, it must be noted that the second stage to the holiday; the exploration of the rest of the country, is impossible if you do not have access to a car.

Scotland is inaccessible without a car; there is a reason why the Romans never managed to conquer north of the border! Instead of restricting yourself to Edinburgh (although not a bad thing) make sure that you hire a car from the airport as soon as you arrive in Scotland. The service is cheap and very quick; particularly if you book beforehand and causes no hassle whatsoever. For a little bit of extra time spent at the airport you can have a whole nation at your fingertips, just ready for you to explore.
