The Royal Mile in Edinburgh is a series of streets that form the main way through the old part of Edinburgh. Six streets make up the Royal Mile, which is the busiest tourist area in the Edinburgh. Here we’ll take a quick look at some of the pretty historical sites you can see.

Once you’ve jumped in your car rented in Edinburgh, you should follow signs for the Royal Mile. Once here, your first port of call is Castle Esplanade and Castlehill. Here you can see a 19th century parade ground for troops, and the locally-famous ‘Cannonball House’ which is a house with a cannonball lodged into the side. Rumour states that the cannonball was fired accidently from the castle, and hit the house many years ago.

Next on your list to visit is Lawnmarket, this one of the smaller streets but here you can see an original 17th century preserved townhouse and the remains of Edinburgh’s traditional linen market.

By far the biggest and busiest area of the royal mile is the High Street – here you will see the fantastic court buildings such as Scotland’s High Court of Justiciary. The famous Heart of Midlothian can be found embedded into the floor here, where prisoners travelling to the Tolbooth Prison would traditionally spit on the heart; don’t forget to keep up the tradition and share a little saliva yourself! One of the more aesthetically pleasing attractions in Edinburgh is The Bridges; a pair of bridges running north and south through the town, and are definitely worth a photo or two.

As you end your journey down the Royal Mile you will travel through Canongate and Abbey Strand, where you can find various museums and educational buildings tied to the University of Edinburgh along with the new Scottish Parliament buildings.

If you are visiting Edinburgh then it well worth hiring a car so that you can visit the castle as well as other historic places of interest. The castle is in the city and so it is possible to walk there if you are based in the city but it is up a steep hill and the pavements are cobbled so it could be tricky if you are not good on your feet. However, it is well worth a visit for a lot of reasons.

Firstly, being up on the hill, you get a great view of the city which is certainly well worth looking at. The place is an indoor and outdoor venue so great for all weathers. Then you get to find out about the history of the place and see the crown jewels of Scotland if you wish. You can admire the architecture of the castle and look at the cannons. There are a lot of photo opportunities at this very historical place. I went to the castle with my sister and found it a fascinating place to visit. I remember queuing to see the crown jewels and really enjoying looking at them close up once I got to see them. The anticipation, while I was waiting actually added to my enjoyment I think. I could have spent a long time there, looking at everything carefully and learning all about it and basically just taking in the atmosphere of the place and I will definitely return if I get the opportunity to visit Edinburgh again.

When you fly in to Edinburgh, Scotland, you will probably be impressed by the architecture, the hustle and bustle, and probably even by how well the city combines traditional looks with modern style. However, you should also keep in mind that Edinburgh isn’t the only city in Scotland. In fact, it’s not even the largest city in Scotland; that honor is left for Glasgow.

Scotland is comprised of more than 790 islands, including the northern section of Great Britain and covers a land mass of over thirty thousand square miles. Contained in that land are great monuments from the middle ages, wonderful ancient settlements from prehistory, and even the infamous Loch Ness.

With everything that Scotland has to offer it doesn’t make sense to restrict yourself to a single city or even a single area. The best way ensure that you have the freedom you will need to explore all the magnificent sights, is simply to rent a car. There are a few very good and internationally reputable companies that can rent cars from Edinburgh International. Nevertheless, it’s always better to book your car in advance to avoid any confusion or the possibility that they may actually be out of cars.

Once you have your car you are able to go see Loch Ness and then travel to the Wallace Monument followed by anywhere else you want to visit before you leave. Not having a car will not only hinder your enjoyment, but it may also disallow you chances to experience everything you’d like before leaving Scotland.
