The Royal Mile in Edinburgh is a series of streets that form the main way through the old part of Edinburgh. Six streets make up the Royal Mile, which is the busiest tourist area in the Edinburgh. Here we’ll take a quick look at some of the pretty historical sites you can see.
Once you’ve jumped in your car rented in Edinburgh, you should follow signs for the Royal Mile. Once here, your first port of call is Castle Esplanade and Castlehill. Here you can see a 19th century parade ground for troops, and the locally-famous ‘Cannonball House’ which is a house with a cannonball lodged into the side. Rumour states that the cannonball was fired accidently from the castle, and hit the house many years ago.
Next on your list to visit is Lawnmarket, this one of the smaller streets but here you can see an original 17th century preserved townhouse and the remains of Edinburgh’s traditional linen market.
By far the biggest and busiest area of the royal mile is the High Street – here you will see the fantastic court buildings such as Scotland’s High Court of Justiciary. The famous Heart of Midlothian can be found embedded into the floor here, where prisoners travelling to the Tolbooth Prison would traditionally spit on the heart; don’t forget to keep up the tradition and share a little saliva yourself! One of the more aesthetically pleasing attractions in Edinburgh is The Bridges; a pair of bridges running north and south through the town, and are definitely worth a photo or two.
As you end your journey down the Royal Mile you will travel through Canongate and Abbey Strand, where you can find various museums and educational buildings tied to the University of Edinburgh along with the new Scottish Parliament buildings.
